How to dress for the races

If you are off to the races then you’ll need to know the etiquette around what to war. The rules behind formal wear at races is not too complicated,simply follow the guidelines below to ensure you look the part.

What to wear in a royal enclosure

The royal enclosure at a race is a special area so there is a strict dress code. Men must wear either black or grey morning dress including a top hat (although the hat can be removed within a restaurant or private box). Any overseas visitors can wear the formal national dress of their country.

What to wear in the public area

Men located in the grandstand area must wear a shirt and tie,preferably with a suit or jacket. Please note sports attire,jeans and shorts are strictly forbidden. Below are some examples of

Do’s and don’ts to race attire

* Avoid colourful socks –they should be grey or black.
* Do not stuff your handkerchief into the breast pocket – make an effort to fold it.
* Cravats should not really be worn so go with a high quality tie which can add colour to the whole outfit.
* Wear a crisp,white shirt showing at least half an inch of shirt cuff below the coat sleeve.
* Always leave the bottom button undone on a waistcoat.
