Suprisingly a few generations ago you would not have seen a man wearing a wedding ring; now-a-days though it’s almost frowned upon if a man does not wear one (take the most recent Royal Wedding example). Most couples will tend to split the bill when it comes to buying a ring however it’s certainly not uncommon for the man to buy both. To help the groom pick the appropriate ring we’ve created a guide using examples from legendary jewllers Goldsmiths.
1) Choosing the metal and stone
If you stick with tradition then the metal of the ring should match the metal of the engagement ring you bought. In general the most popular metals are ‘yellow gold’ (a higher carat is the most robust for a lifetime), ‘white gold’ and ‘platinum’ (this is rarer than gold making it more expensive) and ‘titanium‘ (a new exciting metal for wedding bands). If you do end up choosing a stone for the ring then look to a hard stone such as emerald or diamond.

2) Choosing the size of the ring
No need for guess work here as there is an official grading system in place. The measurement runs from A – Z (with A being the smallest). A perfectly fitted ring will not move on your finger however it should be able to be removed by twisting it over your knuckle.

3) Choosing the shape of the ring
There are a number of wedding ring styles to choose from including cureved rings and straight-edged styles. Rounded-edged wedding rings will have a gently curved style whilst the modern high domed rings will have a more pronounced curve.

4) Buying your wedding ring
Once you’ve chosen style and metal, and have the necessary finance in places, it’s time to go buy the rings. In general you should allow a couple of months for the creation of the ring (longer if the rings are being engraved). If they are not going to be ready in time you can always go with a ‘loaner’ ring. Two recommended online retailers of wedding rings include Goldsmiths and H Samuels.
