Groom duties

You’re bound to make joint decisions with your fiancée for the wedding however there are some key decisions you (as the groom) will need to make.

Choosing your best man
As one of the key decisions you’ll be making for the decision you don’t want to rush into this – give it some thought. You should choose someone who knows you well and has the right qualities to be able to fulfil the duties below. Most men know straight away who their best man will be however if one does not come to mind then we recommend you pick the most reliable and ideally someone who knows enough about you to make a speech around your friendship.

Don’t forget that you’ll also need to choose the ushers for the wedding however you can choose these alongside your future wife. It’s likely there may be particular men on her side who she wants to include and you should try to accommodate this.

Choosing the outfits
In the most part the groom gets to decide what he, the best man and ushers should be wearing. It’s likely your fiancée will want to get involved and decisions such as will you be wearing a morning suit, choosing page boy outfits will need to be made. We suggest you check our guide to mens wedding attire for more advice.

Buying the ring
Most people these days buy two rings and split the cost. Even if you are buying the rings, you should let your wife choose hers. She’s going to have to wear it for the rest of her life, so it’s worth it to be on the safe side.

Writing a speech
There’s no getting away from it the groom’s speech is compulsory. The good news is that there is no problem in going for a short, sincere effort rather than any long-winded effort. The greatest advice we can give you is prepare, prepare, prepare … do not leave it to the last minute. There are also plenty of websites that provide great advice on giving a speech.

Planning the honeymoon
This is one of the enjoyable groom duties – that of planning the honeymoon. It’s unrealistic to expect the bride not to have some sat however you will be responsible for the bookings and all transport arrangements.

Misc duties
Along with all the duties mentioned above the groom also has other smaller decisions to make including wedding transport, choosing the DJ, arranging drinks and wedding photography. We suggest you check the various guides under ‘groom advice’.

Best man duties

Just like the groom the best man also has a number of duties to consider for the wedding:

Organising the stag night
His last night of freedom! Try to choose something the groom will enjoy, rather than what you and all his mates want to do!

Writing a speech
A lot of the guests will be looking forward to the speech as its the moment when you can tell the future family what’s he’s really like. The speech tends to follow both groom and father of the bride.

Timing
Your most important duty is to get the groom to the ceremony on time. We recommend you turn up at least half an hour before the ceremony is due to begin.

Rings
You will usually be asked to look after the happy couples wedding rings … and produce them at the appropriate moment in the ceremony. Yes, you will be checking that they are in your pockets throughout the ceremony.

Dance
Following the dance between groom and bride you’ll have to dance with the chief brides-maid … no matter what she looks like!
