Dinner jackets

The typical dinner jacket (or DJ) is a single-breasted, black and ventless jacket normally made of wool. Double breasted models are less common these days but can be acceptable. In Europe the lapels tend to be faced with silk in a satin weave. You can find two types of lapels; the shawl collar (with its origins from the smoking jacket) and the peak lapel (that came from the tailcoat). The double-breasted jacket is slightly more modern than the single-breasted, and less formal.

The white tuxedo jacket is often worn in more tropical climates. It does not have silk-faced lapel but is worn with exactly the same clothes as a normal jacket. Tip – it is poor etiquette to remove ones jacket during a formal social event.
