A morning suit or morning dress is a daytime formal dress code which is made up of a tailcoat, waistcoat, and striped trousers. Morning dress tends to worn at special occasions such as weddings or royal functions such as Ascot.
The concept of a morning suit originally started life in the nineteenth century making it easier for men to ride horses. During the Edwardian era it took over in popularity as the standard daytime form of men’s full dress. Since then it has become the acceptable attire for most formal day time events.

Morning suits
Morning dress can be split into the following areas:
1/ A morning coat – either grey or black made of herringbone wool with knee length tails.
2/ A waistcoat – traditionally grey in colour (can be black or light pastel such as blue). Sometimes a white slip is worn, which is a strip of fabric buttoned to the inside top of the waistcoat to simulate the effect of a paler under-waistcoat.
3/ A pair of formal trousers – these trousers should be black have at least one forward pleat in each leg. Braces can be worn to prevent the waistband from appearing beneath the waistcoat.
4/ A formal shirt – traditionally the shirt should be a crisp white cotton shirt with stiff collar. The shirt should have sleeves with double cuffs fastened with cufflinks.
5/ A tie – now-a-days you have a choice of multiple colours and indeed you can also get away with a cravat.
6/ Shoes – traditionally shoes should be a polished black plain Oxford (without brogues).
Although you can hire a morning suit over the years the price of morning dress has tumbled and it’s certainly worth investing in one if you have a number of formal occasions coming up.
